Hello! My name is Andrew Voulgarelis and I live in New Hampshire now, where I go to high school at Phillips Exeter Academy.
I grew up in Chicago, where I was lucky enough to witness the Blackhawks win three Stanley Cups! I started playing hockey at five years old and haven’t stopped! I currently play for my high school.
I started working as a hockey official when I was twelve, but there were signs I would follow this path much earlier. In 3rd grade, I dressed as an NFL referee for Halloween. And when friends in elementary school would play any sport during recess, I always officiated. I guess I’m just a rules guy!
In my first couple of years as a USA Hockey official, I averaged about 15-25 games a season. I started with U8 cross ice and basically worked that for my whole first season. Then I started working full ice U10. I did a lot of U8 and U10 in the beginning. I knew it was important to have good fundamentals before moving up age groups. I was also careful to never work the same age group that I was playing in.
For the past few seasons, I have worked about 150 games a year, all while still in high school. I’ve moved my way up through the youth levels and am now fortunate to also work college and junior hockey. I’m about to cross the 600 game mark with one season remaining for me in high school!
Here are a few of my favorite accomplishments and experiences:
